Using Chopsticks

  1. Hold your hand in position (see picture 1) - place the first chopstick so that thicker part rests at the base of your thumb and the thinner part rests on the lower side of your middle fingertip.
  2. Bring your thumb forward so that it traps the stick firmly in place. At least two or three inches of chopstick should extend beyond your fingertip. This bottom chopstick will not move at all.
  3. Now position the other chopstick so that it is held against the side of your index finger by the end of your thumb (see picture 2).
  4. Slide the chopsticks so that the end line up still leaving only about 8-10cm from your fingers to the end of the chopsticks pressing the ends against a plate or table may help.
  5. Place a little pressure on the top chopstick. It will move up and down between your index finger and thumb. Remember: the bottom chopstick does not move - your thumb will stay fairly stationary, while the index finger is used to move the top chopstick.
  6. Move the tip of the top chopstick towards the tip of the bottom chopstick. Hold the tips together firmly enough to grasp a piece of food and lift it off the plate.
  7. Remember practice makes perfect so get chopping!

Chopstick Manners

  • It is considered rude to leave your chopsticks standing upright in your bowl of food, rest them on top of your bowl or rest them on a holder on the table.
  • Try your hardest not to stab your food with chopsticks and practice picking it up between the sticks like our pictures show above.
  • Don't use chopsticks to point at someone or emphasise while you are talking it would be like pointing your knife at someone at the table
